DE-FOA-0000675: Advanced Management and Protection of Energy-storage Devices (AMPED)

Energy storage can significantly improve U.S. energy independence, efficiency, and security by enabling a new generation of electric vehicles and by enhancing the capabilities of the U.S. electricity grid.  While rapid advances are being made in research and development of new battery materials and storage technologies, there remains a need for transformational innovations in the management of energy storage systems. Batteries are complex systems, and developing techniques to cost-effectively monitor, manage, and predict important performance measures remains a key technological challenge.  As a result, many battery systems are over-designed and operated well below their maximum energy and power capabilities to meet operational requirements that minimize the risk of premature or catastrophic failure.  ARPA-E's AMPED Program seeks to develop breakthrough sensing, control, and system technologies that can be practically deployed for superior management of commercial battery systems.
