 MUONS Inc.Rolland JohnsonPresident Small Business Power Generation and Energy Production: Liquid and Gaseous Fuels/Nuclear Muons, Inc. is developing a conceptual design for a Nuclear Power Plant that is based on a superconducting RF proton accelerator that drives a number of subcritical molten-salt small modular reactors with internal spallation neutron targets. The starting points for the components are the ORNL SNS Linac and the ORNL MSRE fueled with UNF that has been converted to fluorides (ORNL/TM-2018/989 - not reprocessing). Online processing of the circulating MS continuously removes (lighter) volatile radioisotopes, neutron poisons, and other useful materials while leaving (heavier) actinides in the MS to be consumed to produce energy and to reduce the lifetime of the remnants. Short beam interruptions are no problem for MS systems. A non-radioactive MS intermediate storage system will provide backup for longer downtimes and provide a passive sink for decay heat in case of loss of power accidents.

The combination of subcritical operation and low core inventory of radiotoxic isotopes, which can be guaranteed by design and continuous monitoring, ensures an intrinsically safe design that facilitates and expedites the licensing of the NPP. This, in turn, allows Deming’s Fifth Total Quality Management Principle [“Improve constantly and forever the system of production and service, to improve quality and productivity, and thus constantly decrease costs.”] To reduce the levelized cost of electricity, the first accelerator module and first SMR will start producing electricity early in the life of the NPP, followed by a series of next of a kind modules that will have improved performance and lower cost. The intrinsically safe design will allow larger improvements between each module generation. When the desired NPP power is reached, the process will continue by replacing the earliest modules for decreased cost. This NPP will never need to become obsolete and will benefit forever from innovations that have not yet been imagined.
